{nesting} simple + welcoming spring entryway

Hello everyone!

March is here and I’m VERY ready for spring!  I love the blooming flowers and the feeling of renewal that every spring brings.  It’s like a fresh start.  And, there’s nothing more refreshing than opening the windows in the house and bringing in that crisp, clean air.  So wonderful!

This week, I gathered things to create a fabulous spring entryway.  The entryway is the place in which we greet guests.  It’s a front door that, as folks drive by your home, can feel so warm and welcoming–a feeling that can be evoked with a few simple pieces.

Mom used to decorate for EVERY holiday and emphasized that even the little things in life should be celebrated–like the coming of a new season.  She always made everything so special…simple, but special.  It was a great memory from my childhood that I want to carry on with my own children.

So today, I wanted to share with you photos from my simple + welcoming spring entryway…because spring is a wonderful thing to celebrate.  I think mom would have appreciated and loved my little stylings.  :-)

I didn’t want to clutter up the entryway table.  I really just wanted to have a few simple things that were pretty. I found the tree and bunnies at Pier 1 and the ornaments at The Accessory Place in Houston, TX.

ornamentsThese little ornaments remind me so much of vintage things.  I love pairing new with old.  Always have.

Front Entry 2

Here’s the front stoop + door.  I recently planted a gorgeous white camellia in the huge pot on the right.  Unfortunately, it hasn’t yet begun to bloom. I found the rug at Bed Bath and Beyond and made the wreath myself from floral pieces I selected at The Accessory Place.

wreath detail

I wanted to talk a little about the wreath.  Let’s start with…I have no professional training on how to make a wreath and really don’t have much of a clue when it comes to correctly putting these things together.  I just know what I want it to look like.  So yesterday, I went down to The Accessory Place and picked out {with the help of this fabulous little lady} items that I thought would make a beautiful spring wreath.  What I originally wanted:  hydrangea on a wreath that evoked a very organic feeling {like I just plucked a bunch of flowers from my garden and made a wreath with them}.  Well, as we started gathering pieces {and they have the most abundant selection of silk flowers that I have ever been exposed to} I realized that the hydrangea were way to big and were stealing the loose, whimsical, and organic feel I really wanted.  Once we figured that out, I was better able to start seeing my piece come together.  I selected several “spray” pieces that could be stretched and were more “flowy” and wispy.

Here’s how I {unprofessionally} made my wreath:

I started with a plain ol’ grapevine wreath.  I selected one that fit the size of my front door.

grapevine wreathNext, I put a base layer of greenery that would give a place for accent pieces to be tucked.

step 1Once you’ve created a greenery base, you can add your next layer.  I wanted to create a wreath that had a few white and light pink accents in a nest of green stuff.  So I chose my second layer to be more green stuff.  Additionally, I wanted my wreath to be wispy, so I chose green things that were more wispy.

step 2Once I finished evenly distributing this layer, I began adding my white + light pink accents.  When I selected these pieces, I chose a variety of wispy and not so wispy stuff.  The white poofs on the bottom left of the pic ABOVE are an example of the not so wispy.  I was able to just tuck these pieces in small pairings all around the wreath.

The last step was to add my really special pieces…the light pink accents.  Once I distributed those evenly, I added one last thing.  I love the woodsy feel of the grapevine, so I added some groupings of bendable stick thingies into the wreath as well.  You can see these additions BELOW.

wreath detailThe last thing I would say to do when making your wreath is to edit.  What I mean by this is just because you’ve put all your fabulous flowers onto your wreath doesn’t mean your done.  Look over the balance of your wreath.  Is everything well distributed?  Do you have a ton of green leaves from each of the flowers that are a bit overwhelming? Maybe a few of those leaves could stand to be plucked.  Bend your pieces if you need to and move stuff if it’s feeling awkward.

I hope you enjoyed the post today! May it inspire your own spring entryways!

Live fabulously, folks!

Lovely Spring decor! Where did you find the beautiful round mirror above your entry table?

Hi Diane! I purchased the mirror about 2 years ago from Pier 1. They still had that mirror last summer, but unfortunately aren’t selling it anymore.

thank you! You did an excellent job of explaining what you did. And I love the pics. I am going to give this a try except I plan to hang it inside the house in my kitchen window and I can enjoy it while I’m at the sink. So pretty.

What a gorgeous wreath!! I think I’ll be making one today! Did you attach the greenery by hot gluing or did you just tuck them into the grapevine wreath?

    March 23, 2013
    • Just tucked them in…easy peasy! Thanks so much for the compliment! I really appreciate you stopping by.

I am in love. You did an amazing job! I cannot find any of these flowers or leaves and I am afraid it won’t look as good. Do you know if the accessory place will ship out of State? Or do you know the maker of the flowers?

    March 28, 2013
    • Leah #

      Hey Liz!
Thank you so much for your comment. I am almost certain they will not ship. And, I don’t have a clue what company they are using for the florals. The lady mentioned the select them at market each season.
I would suggest seeing the pieces in person to get a good idea of what should go on your wreath. I hope you can find something comparable in your area.
Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
